The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) was established in 1950 and is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The mission of NINDS is to seek basic knowledge about the brain and nervous system and use this knowledge to reduce the burden on the nervous system. To achieve this goal, NINDS supports and conducts basic, translational and clinical research on both normal and diseased nervous systems. Fund and conduct research training and career development programs to increase expertise in basic, translational and clinical neuroscience and to ensure a dynamic, talented and diverse workforce seeking to better understand, diagnose, treat and prevent neurological disorders.
NINDS crews are located in several buildings in suburban Maryland, near Washington, D.C. NINDS program directors, scientific review officers, grant administration officers, and most administrative staff are located in the Neuroscience Center (NSC) building in Rockville, Maryland. Additional administrative staff and most of the on-campus science and clinical researchers are located in Building 10, Building 31 and the John Edward Porter Center for Neuroscience Research at the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
