On July 1, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson issued an executive order establishing the John Fogarty Center for International Center for Advanced Study in Health Sciences at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The Fogarty International Center (FIC) is dedicated to advancing the NIH's mission by supporting and promoting global health research conducted by U.S. and international researchers, building partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and training the next generation of scientists to meet global health needs.
For more than 50 years, support for the FIC International Research and Research Training Program has grown from a first-year budget of $500,000 to $81 million in fiscal 2020. The center's research, training, and capacity building efforts have expanded to more than 100 countries, involving approximately 5,000 scientists in the United States and abroad.
Since its founding, FIC has laid the foundation for responding to a changing world by making fundamental investments in the scientific workforce, developing a global research network that can respond quickly, utilizing new tools and research methods, focusing on emerging global challenges such as pandemics, climate change, and social injustice, and being the focal point of NIH's international affairs.
