The Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) of the University of Tokyo was founded in 1946 to promote empirical social science based on systematic data collection and conduct comparative research at a high academic level. ISS staff specialize in four academic fields: law, political science, economics and sociology, and research areas include East Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The Institute's mission is to contribute to the social sciences' understanding of Japan and the world by conducting empirical research using historical and comparative perspectives, and by leveraging the interdisciplinary and international nature of the academic base.
ISS offers lectures and seminars to researchers and conducts educational activities in graduate and undergraduate schools. The three main goals of the Institute are to promote joint research including institution-wide joint research projects, to lay the foundation for empirical social science research centered on data archives, and to become an international hub for social science research in Japan.
