Taking advantage of Kyushu University's long history of conducting research and educational activities in Asia and Oceania, and establishing deep ties with Kyushu University both historically and proximity, researchers established the Kyushu University Institute of Asia and Oceania as the second of these research and educational institutions in April 2019. Through this institute, they aim to create a new academic field that will open up the future by contributing to solving social problems in Asian and Oceanian countries by solving today's problems and anticipating the problems that will be faced tomorrow.
The institute adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an international goal set by the United Nations for 2016 to 2030, as the most pressing issue to be addressed first. To facilitate research to address these issues, they will collaborate with Kyushu University's Interdisciplinary Energy Research Platform, which is already exploring energy-related sustainable development goals and breaking down barriers between humanities, sociology, science, technology, and life sciences to work together to achieve them. In addition, based on the needs of countries and regions facing these issues, they will work with field personnel to identify, resolve, mitigate, and anticipate problems.
Based on the belief that solving problems in Asia and Oceania will lead to solving world problems, the Institute promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative research and educational activities together with the entire Faculty.
