Using tiny silicon probes, brain activity can be recorded in high definition

The neural pixel probe is described in a paper published in Nature. Neural pixels -- tiny silicon probes thinner than a human hair -- can simultaneously record the activity of hundreds of neurons in multiple different areas of the brain of mice and rats. Existing techniques can only provide detailed data on very small regions of the brain, limiting our understanding of how responses from different regions of the brain coordinate to perform complex behaviors.
In 2018, neuropixels will be available at cost to neuroscientists around the world. About 400 prototypes are currently being tested at research centers around the world. Leading neuroscientists have used them in their work to reveal how the complex network of brain cells supports our ability to learn and make decisions.
Current recording devices rely on wire electrodes, which limits the number that can be placed in the brain at the same time; They typically have only a few dozen sensors. The new silicon probe has 960 recording points spread across most areas of the brain, allowing researchers to simultaneously record more neurons in a single experiment than ever before.
Neuroscientists use mouse and rat brains as models for the human brain, because many of the structures and connections present in the human brain also exist in rodents, only on a smaller scale.
The detectors were developed by an international team that received $5.5 million in funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust. Scientists from HHMI Janelia Research Park, the Allen Institute and University College London collaborated with engineers from nanotechnology company IMEC to build and test the detector.
The "neural pixel" probe is 10 millimeters long (roughly the same size as a mouse or rat brain) and 70x20 μm wide, with 100 recording spots per millimeter. The probe automatically converts the detected electrical signal into digital data for computational analysis. Researchers at University College London have developed new data analysis methods to turn this data into meaningful information about the activity of individual brain cells.
