中山大学中国公共管理研究中心成立于2000年12月25日，原为中山大学行政管理研究中心，是公共管理学科唯一的教育部人文社会科学重点研究基地，中国行政管理学科唯一的国家级重点研究基地。中心在科学研究、学术交流、社会服务等方面取得了优异成就，成为中国公共管理学科研究的引领者、国际公共管理交流的发起者和积极参与者。
中心与国内外多所著名大学及相关学术机构建立了良好的交流与合作关系以及学术联系，通过品牌学术会议、访学计划、合作研究等方式，建立多元化的学术交流渠道，创办《公共行政评论》和《中国公共政策评论》，为公共管理学打造常态化的成果交流平台，联合发起华人公共管理学术研讨会等品牌学术会议，推动了国内外公管学界的交流。
中心注重以特色研究方向凝练学术团队，已逐步成为中国公共管理学科发展和决策咨询的旗舰机构。中心的日常研究活动已形成专门性、专业化、跨学科的特点，重视数据收集，提供持续性研究资源，形成中国县域治理、社会政策支出、廉政指数、政治信任度等特色数据；拓展新兴交叉学科领域研究，建设内容包括心理学基本实验仪器、心理学实验软件系统、心理测评系统、行为采集记录系统、虚拟设计仪器与软件等；建设民意与舆情调查中心，及时、迅速、精准地调研、跟踪、发布和应用民意舆情信息，为国家政策制订、宣传、实施等环节提供信息服务。
