The Beuys Thompson Institute is a premier life sciences research facility located on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. BTI scientists investigate basic plant and life science research with the goal of improving food security, improving the environmental sustainability of agriculture, and making fundamental discoveries that contribute to enhancing human health.
BTI has 150 employees, scientists from 40 countries around the world, and has twice been named one of the best companies in New York State. Its 15 principal investigators are leading minds in plant development, chemical ecology, microbiology and plant pathology, and have access to state-of-the-art greenhouse facilities with computer-controlled and integrated pest management systems. BTI has one of the highest concentrations of plant bioinformaticians in the United States, and researchers work throughout the field of "omics." BTI researchers have been funded by NSF, NIH, USDA and DOE and publish in top journals. Throughout its work, BTI is committed to inspiring and educating students and providing advanced training for the next generation of scientists.
The Beuys Thompson Institute (BTI) believes that having an informed and engaged public is essential. Outreach and education are therefore the Institute's main directives, striving to make plant science accessible to all audiences and to inspire and support new plant scientists.
BTI hosts professional development programs in collaborative research projects that connect high school science teachers and students with BTI researchers. The institute also offers research and educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as community members, and summer internships for area high school students.
