Founded in 2012, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics uses scientific methods to explain the psychological, neuronal, and sociocultural foundations of aesthetic perception and judgment. The Institute is currently being established with a board of four scientists whose expertise spans literature and music as well as empirical cognition and social science. The research programme will focus on music and literature and study visual art in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Art in Florence and Rome. The institute in the field of architecture and fashion will be integrated through Max Planck research groups and researchers. In addition, the scientists will regularly invite "artist-in-residence", particularly composers and writers, to the Institute to participate in research projects.
The Max Planck Institute for Positive Aesthetics studies the creation and formation of aesthetics and the function of aesthetic practices and preferences for individuals and society. In particular, this study focuses on the basis of aesthetic evaluation perception and experience, including the nature of "aesthetic pleasure" and the various shades of aesthetic pleasure and "aesthetic feeling"; The cognitive and affective mechanisms that control aesthetic judgment perception and its neuronal, physiological, and behavioral correlations; The motivation for aesthetic pleasure (repeated viewing/listening/reading, aesthetically sound decisions to buy "beautiful" items, etc.); The individual genetic acquisition of aesthetic preferences, their changes over the life cycle and their historical, cultural and individual variability; Linguistically capture and discuss the range of historical and culturally variable terms of aesthetic evaluation; The functions of aesthetic practice and judgment on the development of cognitive and emotional ability, individual subjective well-being, self-concept and self-stylization, social communication and economic behavior, etc.
The mission of the Max Planck Institute for Experiential Aesthetics is to provide new scientific and institutional foundations for the interdisciplinary study of aesthetic phenomena, to conduct systematic and fundamental research on the nature and function of aesthetic practice, evaluation and motivation for action in a world in which aesthetic experience and practice, shared aesthetic preferences and decisions of aesthetic motivation permeate everyday life.
