The aim of the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behaviour is to develop a quantitative and predictive understanding of animal decision-making and movement in nature, pursuing an integrated approach that combines physiological, neurological, ecological and evolutionary perspectives, problems and methods. The Institute boasts three departments, three Max Planck research groups, eight research groups and many professionals as well as state-of-the-art animal behavior field and laboratory research facilities. A number of external partners and affiliates are associated with MPIAB, including the Max Planck-Yale Campaign for Biodiversity and the Center for Global Change.
The vision of the Institute is to understand and predict animal decision-making mechanisms in nature, and to uncover behavioral drivers across time, space, organization, and taxonomic scales through the development and application of emerging technologies and analytical methods. To address this complex challenge, the Institute has brought together a diverse, interdisciplinary team to conduct rigorous and reproducible scientific research that is publicly shared. In this way, the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behaviour makes a positive contribution to the global research community, provides scientific training to empower the next generation, fosters a supportive and inclusive work environment, promotes knowledge exchange and productive collaboration.
