The Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (MPI-BI) was founded from two Max Planck institutes of Neurobiology and ornithology. Some 500 employees from more than 50 countries work on basic research in topics such as behavioral ecology, evolutionary studies and neuroscience. The Institute's research focuses on biological intelligence, the ability of animal organisms that have evolved through evolution to acquire, store, apply and transfer knowledge about their environment in order to find new solutions to problems and adapt to changing environments. The mechanisms of biological intelligence are being investigated at all levels: from molecular interactions to entire populations of individuals.
The institute's research aims to decipher the mechanisms of biological intelligence at all levels. Investigations range from molecular interactions to entire populations of individuals. As biological systems adapt in harmony with their natural environment, special attention is paid to animal behaviour in the wild. The study of the brain in its natural environment reveals how organisms communicate with each other and change their environment, or how social interactions lead to the formation of differentiated societies.
