With more than 100 years of research and teaching experience, Leiden University's Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology not only has a strong disciplinary foundation, but also plays a key role in promoting interdisciplinary and international partnerships at Leiden University and beyond.
The Centre for Cultural Anthropology and Sociology of Development at Leiden University uses a signature approach consisting of a unique combination of qualitative, quantitative and visual methods based on ethnographic fieldwork.
In the center's three-year bachelor's degree program, they train students in anthropological theories to critically examine global processes and how they affect diversity, sustainability, and digitalization in a particular region.
The one-year Master's program offers global ethnography students the opportunity to conduct ethnographic research around the world. They can also choose an industry-oriented practice policy sociology major, which includes research internships, or produce ethnographic documentaries in the center's Visual Ethnography major. All students can also take advantage of the research center's field training opportunities in the Netherlands, Philippines and Ghana.
The Centre for Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology focuses on "Global Vulnerability and Social Resilience", contributing topics to the broader national and international research agenda (Horizon 2020 as well as the National Science Agenda NWA) on resilient societies, conflict and cooperation, livable smart cities, environmental quality, past life and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
