Established in 2009, the Real Estate and Finance Center is the most important clearing house for hotel real estate and financial information. Characterized by its intellectual capital, industry experience, and rigorous academics, the center is revered as a leader in real estate and finance. Building on the tradition of hospitality quality research and a growing faculty of real estate and finance, the center is at the forefront of research in all areas of commercial real estate – from studying the behavior of real estate assets in a portfolio to understanding the science of real estate capital markets and hedging real estate risk.
The mission of the Cornell Center for Real Estate and Finance (CREF) is to achieve three main goals: First, CREF will act as a link between the utility real estate industry and Cornell's broader community (faculty, students, and alumni). In this context, CREF will leverage the involvement of practicing real estate professionals to enhance the educational experience of Cornell graduate and undergraduate students studying real estate and inform the Real Estate School of industry trends so that they are better prepared as they design and teach courses. Second, CREF will be the primary provider of thought leadership on real estate and finance topics and disseminate this thought leadership to academia and practitioners in the real estate community. Finally, CREF will enhance the reputation of Cornell University, SC Johnson School of Business, and the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Management as educational and thought leadership forces in the real estate community nationally and internationally.
